Leon Bridges is an American soul singer, songwriter, and record producer. In June of 2020, Leon Bridges and Terrace Martin released a single titled “Sweeter” in response to the murder of George Floyd that same year. In Sweeter, Leon Bridges sings from the perspective of a black man taking his last breath, as the character in the song is wrongfully killed, just like George Floyd and many others before him. Leon Bridges had personal experience with racism as an adolescent growing up in Fort Worth, Texas. Bridges became even more passionate about the topic of police brutality and racism amidst the news of George Floyd, and the 2020 Black Lives Matter movement. He wanted to use his single as a way to pay tribute and bring more awareness to the topic. “Hopefully, in a minuscule way, Sweeter was a beacon of hope and light for the Black community.” His song and music video are very important for all audiences as police brutality and racism has, and still continues to be, a huge issue in our current world. Some important messages of the song Sweeter, are that we are all human and should always treat others the way we want to be treated. At the end of the day, all we have is each other, and I think Leon Bridges made a beautiful tribute to all of those who have unfortunately been victims of this racism and violence.
